SPSS / PASW Mac Patch 18.0.3 and Graphing Fix

Notice: The page exists to bring files and directions from a wide variety of sites to a single page for the purposes of getting graphing working in SPSS / PASW for Mac. It comes with NO WARRENTY whatsoever, though it should be noted that these directions have been followed many times without any reported problems. Any problems you do encounter should be directed to the helpdesk at your institution or IBM /SPSS directly (http://support.spss.com/).

Before you can begin working on the graphing issue, SPSS must be up to date from base version 18 to version 18.0.3 via this free patch. After the patch downloads:

  • Log in as the same user that installed the Statistics 18 product.
  • Ensure that Statistics 18 is not running.
  • Execute the PASW Statistics 18.0.3 Patch installer from the downloaded .dmg file.
  • Statistics 18.0.3 is ready to run. Use the About PASW Statistics 18 menu to verify 18.0.3 is the installed version.

Once you have verified that SPSS is up to version 18.0.3 you can download the free 18.0.3.4 Hotfix. Once the file is downloaded:

  • Extract the contents of the compressed file to your local desktop.
  • Make sure that all instances of Statistics 18 are closed.
  • Click on Finder > Applications > SPSSinc > PASWStatistics18.
  • In the Stats 18 folder, hold down the ‘CONTROL’ button of your keyboard and ‘CLICK’ on the PASWStatistics18.0.app icon. This will bring up a submenu with an option ‘Show Package Contents’. Click on this option to bring up a new window.
  • In the new window, navigate to: Contents > lib folder.
  • Copy the downloaded hotfix file ‘libspssjvm.dylib’ from your desktop to to this /lib folder.
  • Restart Statistics 18.0 and your problem should now be resolved.

you rock. My mac hard drive died and I had forgotten problems finding the files as they are no longer on the spss website, and the terminal runaround i had to go through to install this last time

You are, indeed, a god amongst men. No Faffing around on the (frankly innavigable) IBM site.

SPSS should pay you good money for stopping me moving to Stata or StatView or one of the many, many other options, just because of this!

    Thank you!

    Paul,
You are fantastic! I work with a Mac at home and a PC at work. For over a year I have not been able to graph anything I do at home. So basically, I have to go to work and start over! Your upgrade and patch worked flawlessly. Thank you so much.

Do you know where I can get this same fix for a PC 64bit? It seems IBM does not support versions older than 19 and the support.spss.com website is dead.
    Thanks for your help!

  6. Abby says:

Thank you so much! I work as a research assistant and I have minimal technical expertise — I’m just entering numbers while I get my doctoral degree in the humanities. And yours was the ONLY website (certainly including IBM’s!) that I could make heads or tails of. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  7. Cam says:

Thank you are a genius – thank you! Now I can do my assignment …yay?

  8. Nanja Hibbel says:

    THANK YOU!!! It worked perfectly.

  9. Stephen says:

WORKED ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY. YOU SO SAVED MY ASS AND PREVENTED ME FROM FAILING MY STATISTICS CLASS. FORGET IBM, WE NEED MORE GUYS LIKE YOU!

when I try to install the patch it states it cannot find the installed PAWS/SPPS 18 even though it is installed. I have tried everything! I am running snow lion on a mac book pro. Open University help desk could help me install hot fix but no solution for the patch installer which won’t install. Anyone can help?
